Upper, Middle and Lower Back Pain Can Dramatically Reduce Quality of Life

Your spine is comprised of specialty bones called vertebrae, which are stacked upon one another and interwoven with ligaments and tendons. Inflammation and disruption of the tendons, ligaments and nerves there can cause a range of symptoms, including upper, middle and lower back pain. This misalignment is called a subluxation.

The spinal column has four sections from lower to upper:

  • Sacral
  • Lumbar
  • Thoracic
  • Cervical

Running through these stacked sections of bone are the nerves of the spinal cord. These nerves along with the brain comprise the central nervous system. This system is essential to the transmission of impulses throughout the brain and body which allow us to move and function properly.

Between each spinal vertebrae is a disc, which is a spongy pad of cartilage that functions as a sort of shock absorber. The entire system allows us to move in ways that many of us take for granted – that is until something goes awry.

Subluxations, Back Pain, and Extremity Issues

Spinal subluxations disrupt the normal functioning of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and other tissues in that area. In addition to back pain, this can cause extremity pain, numbness or tingling in the arms and legs. The blood vessels connected with the subluxation are also affected, which can cause a cascade of other problems.

Spinal disc herniation is another possible cause of back pain. Bulging or “slipped” discs can also cause disruption to the spinal column, which can in turn cause persistent pain.

Fortunately, chiropractic adjustments are highly effective in treating these issues. Safe, gentle adjustments help to correct misalignments, reduce irritation and restore proper functioning. This in turn helps to reduce pain and increase quality of life.

Additional lifestyle tips for avoiding back issues and back pain include:

• Maintain a healthy weight

• Exercise regularly

• Stretch and warm up before exercise and strenuous activities

• Bend at the knees when lifting, not at the lower back

• Avoiding twisting the back at awkward angles

• Maintain proper posture

• Wear shoes that fit well and offer proper support

• Make sure your work area has good ergonomics

Reviews From our Satisfied Patients

  • "Dr McGill and staff are giving me my mobility back. For years the rheumatologists have told me not to use chiropractic for my AS. Since I started going to him I now can turn my head more then the 20 degrees left or right and my back and neck pains are down to a 3 or 4 from a 6 or 7. He use a combination of massages and gentle manipulation to get the movement back. 5 stars are not enough."
  • "I recently started having lower back problems and needed help for pain and weakness in my upper legs and hips. After some internet research I decided to contact Dr. McGill at The Spine Clinic. This is a full service office with massage therapy, xrays, and chiropractic services. After a talking with Dr. McGill we decided to take some xrays, massage therapy a a couple of back adjustments that day. I left the office two hours later feeling better and with less discomfort."
